Atlas Project

Atlas Project is an exploration of map-making as related to contemporary art forms and aesthetics. The project consists of 20 intaglio copper plates which have been printed repeatedly and assembled in a grid. Rather than making traditional prints of etchings, I use multiples to form a larger work augmented with paint, and digital map Chine collés. The result is a large installation of hundreds of reconfigured and reimagined “snap shots” of the earth’s terrain.

The imagery is sourced from Google-Earth, representing mountain, farmland and urban topographies. Additionally, I scanned bathymetric maps to trace the configuration of the ocean floor. Landscape as surveillance, blurring boundaries, reconfiguring landmasses loosely reflects geo-political struggles. This work is not meant to be an illustration of events, but a reference to the massive shifting of land, cultures, climate and natural resources.
